2/3/10 Notes on Egypt

The Nile river is the longest river. We don't know if Narmer was a real person or a imaginary person. In the pallet he has the crown of upper and lower Egypt. He took his title by force. The old kingdom wad the first dynasty of Egypt. Pharaohs also wear headdresses and never wearing a top, but always wearing a shirt. In Egyptian sculpture you never find space between the legs. Hieroglyphics are usually carved in stone. They are not pictures that stand for something. Each hieroglyph represents a sound in the Egyptian language. Pyramids are only used to bury the Pharaoh and his family in. People thought the Pyramids were built by slaves. On an expedition people found coins that would've been traded for the labor of building the pyramids. Mortuaries were built to contain dead people. We know that Egypt had a lot of slaves like Jews, Mesopotamians, and slaves from central Africa. Ka was the key to their religion. Your Ka was released when they die and eventually it was called up to judgment. The heart is weighed with a feather and if they equal the same amount than they get to go into the afterlife.
